Report of June meeting

June’s event was a visit to Andrew and Helen Ward’s garden and nurseries at Norwell. We had a good turnout of 16 members and guests. Although no sunshine, it was a lovely balmy evening and a very quiet location, so was nice to hear the bird song in the background.

Firstly Andrew greeted the group and showed us a selection of some flowers he is cultivating. Norwell holds the National Collection of Astrantias and part of the dispersed National Collection of Hardy Geraniums (over 100 varieties). Most of the selection he showed are for sale but a couple are reserved for the collections. Other flowers shown included Astilbe 'Colour Flash', Orchid 'Chatterbox' with a bowed head, Anthemis 'Sauce Hollandaise' (of the same colour), and Campanula 'Kent Belle', which had flowers exactly the colour of Dairy Milk Chocolate foil.

Next Andrew led us around the gardens (which are appreciably larger than on our previous visit four years ago), describing the key attributes of many flowers and shrubs on the way.

The tour finished at the new refreshments pavilion, where we enjoyed tea and cake. The pavilion looks out onto a new area of brick raised beds filled with sand, on which Andrew is growing alpine and desert plants.

The next Garden Club meeting is on Tuesday 17th July circa 6:30pm and is a visit to three private gardens at Fiskerton and Southwell. Members will receive an email with details nearer the event. If anyone else would be interested please email [email protected] for details.
